Distressed Techniques

4/26/2019

Have you always wanted to make your art or paper look old/distressed? Not sure how to create "the look" or not sure how to get started?

Well here are some great ideas!!
Picture
First, to create that "old" look you can use a brown ink pad. We call this technique "inking" because you are adding ink along the edge (or on top of the paper) to add the look of texture.

You can add ink in a variety of different ways using a variety of different tools.

You can use a brown ink pad DIRECTLY onto the paper.. the color is VERY dark and it can be harder to control... but it also depends on the look you are trying to create!!
Picture
Picture
You can also use the Tim Holtz Ink Blending Tool. I like to use this one because you can pick up ink OFF of your ink pad and THEN apply the ink onto the side of the paper. This tool is great to use because the ink is not as intense in color AND you have more control of where you put your ink.

Keep in mind, because the tool is SQUARE, if you get a square impression on your paper, do it in another place on your paper so it *looks intentional*
Picture
Picture
The Nuvo Blending Sponges are GREAT for applying inks because the circular tool leaves no awkward shape behind which makes it look much softer and lends to having more control of WHERE to apply your ink.

Check out here with a piece of woodgrain paper how we applied ink softly until the texture comes to life!!
Picture
Picture
BUT the BEST tool (at least in my personal opinion) for applying inks are the Picket Fence Blending Brushes.

They are SO SOFT and because there are SO MANY BRISTLES it makes it so much easier for applying a soft layer of ink onto the surface.

For example, here I crinkled up some paper then used the Picket Fence Blending Brush (from the large set) to apply a layer of brown ink. When I lightly run my brush across the crinkled paper, the wrinkles become more apparent and look really cool!! (I even crinkled up my paper and smashed it on the ink pad in some areas to create REALLY dark areas of color)

But just LOOK at how nice this gradation of color is... and it makes it look old REALLY quickly.
Picture
Picture
if you have a Home Die-cut Machine, you can run card stock through this Woodgrain Embossing Folder.
Picture
Picture
You can use your Picket Fence Blending Brushes to apply 2 colors of Distress Ink onto the paper that has the embossed image in it. I like to use the 2 colors of Distress Ink because the tone-on-tone colors give the paper more interest.

Depending which shades of brown you use will make the woodgrain image look darker and older or brighter and more fun!

Notice how in each of these ideas the centers of the woodgrains are darker. I usually coat the whole image with the lighter color FIRST and then go back in with the darker color in the centers of the woodgrain.
Picture
Picture
You can also add color to the embossed woodgrain image using Watercolors. I like using the Chisel-tip Waterbrush because then you can use brush-strokes that go up-and-down to follow the same movement of the woodgrain. I tend to spray my watercolors with WATER first, then pick up the color and brush it across the textured paper. I always start with a lighter shade of brown and then move to darker colors.

On the image below, the black was added LAST by just rubbing the black ink pad along the texture. I love how imperfect it is! It actually looks pretty neat!!
Picture
Picture
Ok, now for some FUN ideas!!!

Check out this idea using crinkled Tissue Paper and PVA!
Picture
Picture
On your piece of paper, stamp an image with Versafine Clair ink, Nocturne (or another water-proof ink) and then brush on a little bit of PVA around the image and "scrunch" the Tissue Paper into the PVA. You can add a little more PVA if needed. I applied Tissue Paper around the image on the top and bottom.

THEN use the Picket Fence Blending Brushes to apply a soft layer of Distress Ink (Walnut Stain and Black Soot is what I used here). I LOVE the look of the inks on the crinkled Tissue Paper... it adds so much texture and dimension.. and it makes it look old!!
Picture
Picture
Picture
On this one I used the Distress Oxide ink, Peacock Feathers AND the Distress Ink, Black Soot. Showing that YES you can use the 2 kinds of inks together!! (and honestly, I LOVE blending with the Oxide inks!! They are SO VIBRANT!!! )
Picture
I used one of the Fred B. Mullett Stamps for this card and I LOVE how it turned out!!! I stamped in the Versafine Clair ink, Nocturne because I didn't want my image to bleed or move when I applied a layer of PVA and Oxide inks..
Picture

Or check out this idea:
  • Use 3 colors of Distress Oxide inks (Wild Honey, Lucky Clover, and Wilted Violet) and Distress Ink (Black Soot). Start out by applying some of each of the Oxide Inks to a piece of Solar White card stock.
  • Spray some water to blend the colors together. Use a heat-gun to heat-set the inks.
  • Apply a soft layer of Distress Ink, Black Soot using the Picket Fence Blending Brushes
  • "Fleck" the paper with water using some water on your fingertips. Don't worry.. it's not meant to be perfect!! Use your heat-gun to heat-set this image again.
  • Lastly, use your Picket Fence Blending Brushes to apply another soft layer of Distress ink, Black Soot and watch as those "flecks" of water become darker!!
THIS IS SO FUN to create!!
Picture

I love the look of a Collage Art Piece with a Distressed Theme...

I used a combination of stamps, Distress Oxide inks, Distress inks, water, and the White Zig pen in this design to add a fun look! I LOVE the vibrancy of these Distress Oxide Inks!!!

I stamped my Halo Bird image and the circular textured image with Versafine Clair ink, Nocturne because I wanted my images to be waterproof as I added in the brighter Oxide inks and moved them with a spritz of water.
Picture
Picture
Picture
I LOVE the Halo part of this bird image!! So when I went to create an Ocean-inspired piece I used the SAME HALO but just inked the image without the bird so I could stamp a Lighthouse in the center instead!!
Picture
I LOVE HOW THIS TURNED OUT!!!!! I had so much fun creating this.. I love the pop-of-color with the Distress Oxide inks and the movement that was created from this swirl stamp from Impression Obsession... what a FUN CARD to create!!!
Picture
Picture
In this image, the white highlights were created with Bleed-Proof White and the splatter was also created from the same ink

There are SO MANY WAYS to make your art look distressed!!! These are just a few ideas of ALL THE THINGS you can do!!!

Time to get out your inks, paints, and tools and start playing!!!

One Sheet Wonder, 15 cards!

4/21/2019

Last week for Demo, Bekah showed us SO MANY wonderful ideas for making cards!! The theme was "one sheet wonder" which is a technique used by card makers where you buy only one sheet of  12" x 12" decorative paper and cut it in a way where there is NO PAPER leftover! Using solid-colored card bases, Bekah created these 15 FANTASTIC cards that I just LOVE!!!

Bekah used ONE SHEET OF DECORATIVE PAPER from the BoBunny paper collection, Harmony
Picture
This is the template that she used!

Take note that she wrote the dimensions (in inches) on each of the pieces of paper so you can cut your OWN paper down to size to make these cards! Bekah also put a letter of the alphabet on each section to distinguish which ones go together on the same card

I am going to show you each of the cards she created and I'll organize the cards by the letter of the alphabet so you can easily find the piece that she used on the template.

NEW Creative Expressions and BLING!

4/20/2019

For those of you who don't know... We recently got in a bunch more Creative Expressions goodies!!!
Picture
I have also been IN LOVE with all their stamps!! We just got in several more!!
Picture
Picture
The Dragonfly image from Wendy's Class is also back in stock!!! This Dragonfly is GORGEOUS!!
Picture
We love, LOVE these stunning die-cuts!!! Their new sentiments are so sweet and small... Great for card making!!
Picture
Check out some of their new Tile Collection Die-cuts!!!
Picture
These new Tile die-cuts are SO FUN to play with and make cards with!!

Each of the Broken Tiles Collections have a design die-cut AND a shape-die cut so you can cut the tiles out of OTHER PAPERS or OTHER DIE-CUTS so the tiles all match up!!

Check out this card Bekah created using ALL 3 dies!! (Notice how the Bitty Dots die-cut was then cut out of one of the broken tiles shape so it matched up PERFECTLY with the other 2 shapes!!!)

After Bekah created her 3 tiles she adhered them to a piece of Silver Glitter Paper. I love the contrast here!!
Picture
Picture
I also LOVE what Tracy created here where she layered RED SCRAPS of paper and a fun black and red doodle UNDERNEATH the Broken Tile die-cut shapes!!!  She pasted the tiles she created onto a piece of Black Glitter Paper.

The contrast and the COLORS are so much fun here!!!
Picture

Creative Expressions and Nuvo both make AMAZING BLING!!!!!

Shaped Gems
Shaped Glitter
Gold Leafing
Biodegradable Glitter

Of course, when these NEW GEMS came in I was SCREAMING WITH JOY but even better is that they come in so many WONDERFUL designs!!
Picture
Picture
Each container comes with 3 sizes of gems!!! I love how iridescent and glittery they are!
Picture
Of course, I was OVER THE MOON at the Butterfly AND Star Shaped Glitter!!!!
Picture
Picture
Picture
Just LOOK how tiny these little Butterflies are!! I love how precious this card is when you add the little butterflies in as an embellishment!!

(But really, any of the shaped glitters OR gems would also work great for Shaker Cards!)
Picture
I love HOW MANY different colors of Star-Shaped Glitter that Creative Expressions carries!!

It makes me SO HAPPY!
Picture
Just look how wonderful!!
Picture
Also, Creative Expressions makes these FANTASTIC containers of Gold Leaf flakes in a variety of different color combinations... and they REALLY pack these full... so you get a LOT of leafing!!!
Picture
Now, Glitter has kind of been getting a lot of flack recently because it's *not great for the environment* ... and when I saw that Creative Expressions makes BIODEGRADABLE GLITTER I was SO EXCITED to get some for myself!!!

I love the different shapes of glitter in it too!!!

Scrapbook Ideas

4/20/2019

When it comes to Scrapbooks and Scrapbooking... there are lots of things you can do!!

When Tracy shared her Scrapbook Demo, there were a few *different* ideas that I would love to share with you!!
Picture
Check out this idea... On one of her Scrapbook pages, she wanted to have an insert where she could have a pull-out card.. so after her page was DONE, she took her X-acto knife and created a slit in the plastic sheet where her card could pull-out so it could be read even if the page was in the protective sleeve.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Each Scrapbook off the shelf has plastic protective pages included. However, the pages can also be purchased separately in packs of 5 if you just need refills :-)
Picture
I also loved this clever idea.... Tracy wanted to create a little envelope for movie tickets. She used her Score Board and a corner rounder to make her own envelope that fit the tickets perfectly.
Picture
Picture
My favorite part is how she placed a Removable Glue Dot on the top of the envelope so it would hold the tickets in place to display them the way she wants on the scrapbook page
Picture
Picture
The other idea that I loved was how she USED SCRAPBOOK PROTECTIVE SHEETS to store her die-cuts!!

First, Tracy took her Fuse Tool and these Waterfall Sleeves and added them onto an 8 1/2" x 11" clear plastic sleeve with holes
Picture
Picture
Tracy used the Fuse Tool to attach the Waterfall Sleeves to the Protective Sheet
Picture
Tracy also used the Fuse tool to make sections where she sealed a square or rectangle section and then used an X-acto knife to cut the square open so she could slide a die-cut in place
Picture
Picture
Tracy even used her Fuse Tool to adhere two plastic protective sheets together so she can slide a sheet with the die-cuts cut out BEHIND the storage sleeves so she could easily see what dies were in each sleeve!!
Picture
Picture
Picture
I love when we find clever and useful ideas for using some of the tools or storage containers we already have!! What a fun idea to use the scrapbook pages as die-cut storage!!

Tuesday with Wendy, April 16th

4/19/2019

Cards from Wendy's card making class this week were SO FUN it was really hard to choose a favorite!!!

I mean, just LOOK how wonderful!!
Picture
The first card that Wendy designed was inspired from this stamp set from Stamper's Anonymous, Funny Farm, as well as these 2 new stencils from Tim Holtz, Gradient Hexagons Layering stencil and the Gradient Squares Layering Stencil
Picture
Picture
Picture
To make the card:
  • Start out with 2 cut-down pieces of Solar White card stock.
  • On each piece of white card stock, apply a soft layer of Distress Inks using the Picket Fence Blending Brushes. Start with Mustard Seed, then Twisted Citrone, and finally Broken China. Remember to apply a VERY soft layer...
  • Next overlay one of the new Tim Holtz stencils on the papers and apply a darker coat of the Broken China and Twisted Citrone.. you will end up with BEAUTIFUL tone-on-tone designs across both pieces of paper.
  • Next, use your Tim Holtz stamp platform to stamp the farm animals and their words on the back side of ONE of your stenciled papers. Wendy used Versafine Clair, Nocturne ink.
  • On the other stenciled paper, die-cut the holes. Wendy created a nice guide for cutting out the circles.. She used the Hero Arts nesting circles and cut out the paper in 4 areas with 4 sizes of circles. The holes she cut out line up PERFECTLY to allow you to see the animals peeking through the holes!!
  • I LOVE how clever this hinge is!!! To make the 2 pieces of paper fold like a card, she took 2 of the larger circles she cut out and adhered them to the 2 pieces of paper so one half of the circle is on the front of the card and the back half of the circle is on the back of the card...
  • The 2 leftover circles Wendy cut apart to add interest to the INSIDE of the card!! HOW FUN!
This is card is SO, SO, CUTE!!!!
Picture
Picture
The next card that Wendy created was inspired from this STUNNING Seahorse stamp from Indigo Blue as well as this Tim Holtz Stencil, Gradient Circles Layering Stencil and the Round Sponge Stamp from Fred Mullett
Picture
Picture
Picture
To make the card:
  • Start with a piece of light blue card stock. On the front of the card, use the clear, Versamark Ink to stamp the  Round Sponge stamp image across the paper.
  • Next, use the Versafine Clair ink, Twilight, to stamp the Seahorse image 3 times on the front of the card, it is ok if the seahorse images overlap the sponge images you just stamped.
  • Now, apply Detail Clear embossing powder to the ENTIRE card front, shake off the excess, and heat-set using a heat-gun.
  • Then, use the ALL NEW Dream Drops from Nuvo (Wendy used the green ones, Dragon Scales) and apply small drops along the edge of the Round Sponge images.
  • Next, take the Tim Holtz Stencil, Gradient Circles and lay it around the edge of the card. Apply a small amount of Nuvo Expanding Mouse, Boatyard Blue using the new Silicone Media Spatulas. Heat-set the image using your Heat-gun and watch as the Expanding Mousse expands and raises with the heat!!!
The last card that Wendy designed was inspired by this ADORABLE Llama stamp set from Creative Expressions!!
Picture
To make the card:
  • Start out with a coral-colored card base. Use the Nesting Oval die cuts from Hero Arts to cut out 2 sizes of ovals, one larger one out of Dark Coral card stock and one out of Ice Gold Stardream card stock that is a little bit smaller. Adhere the 2 ovals together using double-sided tape.
  • Stamp the Llama image with Versafine Onyx Black ink onto the Ice Gold card stock. Use Detail Clear embossing powder and heat-set the image.
  • Use Tombow Markers and a Waterbrush to colorize the Llama image.
  • Use one of the filagree stamps to stamp a fun flower filagree in each corner of the front of the card base. Use Tombow markers and the Waterbrush to also colorize the little flowers
  • Use pop-dots to adhere the oval to the front of the card base, centering it between all the filagree stamp images you did in the corners.
  • Finish off the card by applying a few drops of Copper Crystal Drops to the crown of the Llama!
I LOVE how sweet this card is!! The added embellishment on the Llama crown is so sweet..
Picture
