Accordion Book Tutorial, Wedding/Anniversary

12/30/2018

For MANY years, we have been creating our own Accordion Books using products we carry here at the store!!

Check out this Tutorial on how to make your VERY OWN Accordion Book!

For this book, I chose a BEAUTIFUL Black/Gold/White color palette and this paper line from Simple Stories, 2018 and this sheet from ColorPlay from their Hello New Year line
You will need:
  • 3 or 4 sheets of 12" x 12" patterned paper
  • 2 sheets of 12" x 12" Chipboard (Kraft color)
  • 4 sheets of black card stock (or other solid color)
  • 3 to 4 sheets of other solid card stock to layer with (I chose a Stardream Gold Leaf and an Ivory card stock with a fleck in it)
  • Gold Ink Pad
  • Ranger Ink Blending Tool
  • Paper cutter
  • Score board
  • Scissors
  • Double-sided tape, mounting tape, and pop-dots
  • Nuvo Deluxe Adhesive
  • 1 yard of ribbon (I chose a black satin ribbon)
  • Die-cuts, stamps, or other sentiments that you like

To make the Accordion Book:

Start by first taking the 2 pieces of Chipboard and cutting the pieces down to size using a paper cutter. You will need 6 pieces of chipboard that each measure 4 1/2" x 6 1/2"
Then, using the Ranger Ink Blending Tool and a Gold Ink Pad, ink the edges of each piece of chipboard
Next, take a piece of the Stardream Gold Leaf colored card stock and cut it up to get 5 pieces that measure 2" x 5 1/2"

Score each piece of the card stock at 1" so the pieces will each fold in half lengthwise
Then, use Double-Sided Tape to adhere the "hinges" to the pieces of chipboard MAKING SURE to alternate sides that the hinge is adhered so that the book creates the "Accordion" look
Picture

When you lay it flat on the counter it should look like this:
Picture
Next, cut your pieces of black card stock so that they create nice pages for your chipboard base. You will need a total of 12 pieces that each measure 4 1/4" x 6 1/4"

On the BACK page, adhere the piece of Black Satin Ribbon to the Kraft Chipboard piece using Double-Sided Tape. THEN lay down the last piece of black card stock and adhere it in place so the ribbon is secure.

Then, use decorative and patterned card stock to decorate the book!!!

Once you decorate ONE SIDE, flip the book over and decorate the OTHER SIDE!!

The front of the book can be as basic or as exciting as you'd like!! REMEMBER that the front of the book will be the page that opens up LIKE A BOOK. You don't want your Accordion Book to be backwards!!
Picture
We used these BEAUTIFUL die-cuts to decorate the front of the book!! Since this will be a wedding or Anniversary themed book, I used the Mr. and Mrs. die-cut from Impression Obsession and this Mini-Frame Circle from Jeanine's Art
Picture
Picture
I love having a nice, big sentiment at the back of the book.. and this "Pop, Fizz, Clink" cut-out from the patterned paper is just PERFECT!!
Picture
Picture
I also used these fun heart die-cuts to use in the book... The Hearts and Flourish Heart are both from Impression Obsession. I cut them out of Glitter Paper and the Stardream Gold Leaf color of card stock
Picture
Picture
I used both the inside cut-out of the Flourish Heart so I had embellishments for 2 pages!!

Picture
Picture
As you can see... with an Accordion Book, you can open it like a book page-by-page OR lay it out on the counter for all to see!!
Picture
Picture
Stop by to see it in person!! Accordion Books are not only FUN TO MAKE they also make a great gift idea!!! Great for Anniversaries or a Wedding... or even for displaying Graduation Photos!!

Stop by to get inspired to build your very own Accordion Book today!!

See you soon!

Miniature Ideas

4/20/2018

For Demo  this past week, we had SO MUCH FUN learning new ideas for making Miniatures!! Elli was the demonstrator and she showed everyone how to make small miniature dioramas and card ideas...
Picture

This first one was made using a recycled chocolate tin...

Elli made books, a broomstick, tiny ink and quill and SO MUCH MORE!! The little cats can be found in any toy store... these ones specifically came from the Yeager's Toy Store
Picture

This miniature was made with a Harry Potter theme to it.. and it was incredibly fun to see all the details come together...

Picture
Picture
Picture

This idea is fun.. This paper is new from Carta Bella, Spring Market.. and we showed how you can make a quick pocket to put a *mini book* inside!!
Picture
Picture
And here we used that same paper to make... a *mini* accordion book!!!
Picture
Picture
This is a quick one... just take an old metal tin (such as an Altoid tin) and run some ribbon along the side.. easy miniature suitcase!! Great if you are looking to give a tiny set of toys to a kid or if you want to give them a little book or a tiny note.. it is just a fun way to package up a little gift!!
Picture

Here we have another idea for using the metal tins... make a small diorama!

Using charms, ribbon, paper and Diamond Glaze, you can make a miniature pond too!!
Picture
Picture

Or, using die-cuts, ribbon, and a bit of brown paper, you can make a tiny camping scene!
Picture

This last Miniature Idea was made a few months ago and was brought by just to show *what all you can do* in the world of Miniatures!!

Elli calls this the Mini Kitchen and it was put together inside this adorable little lantern!! (Lantern was found at a thrift shop)
Picture
Picture
Some fun details to note:

  • Handles and details on the dishwasher and cupboards was all done using a silver gel pen!!
  • The knives are made with a little magnet sheet and are EVEN REMOVABLE!!
  • Wood grain paper to make the cutting board look real

and SO MUCH MORE!!

Accordion Book-- Enchanted Forest

3/15/2016

I absolutely LOVE the newest from Graphic 45 this season. So I took my creative skills and went to town on the Enchanted Forest paper. Shockingly, I only used 4 sheets from this line, but I highly recommend you get creative and create your own work of art using whatever paper inspires you!! Here's what I did:
Picture
Start out by cutting yourself 6 pieces of chipboard or mounting board. They will all need to measure exactly 4 1/4" × 6 1/4"

I used one piece of 12 x 12 paper (turquoise) and 2 pieces each of the gold and burnt orange papers -- so 5 sheets total. I cut these sheets down to give myself 4 pieces of each color measuring 4 1/8" × 6 1/8"
Picture
Next I took a piece of black paper and cut myself some hinges. I cut out 5 pieces that measure 2" × 5 1/2" . I used double sided tape to adhere it to my pieces of chipboard. *make sure to place it on opposite sides of the chipboard to create the accordion fold throughout the book* Then place your cut pieces of solid papers in a satisfying order and attach with double sided tape.
Picture
Now comes the fun part! ! Decorate your book! I love doing things that are interactive-- and chances are if you are giving this away as a gift, they will love it too!!

I cut out the knight and popped up different parts of his armor with pop dots for a 3D look, I cut out Fairies and interplayed them throughout the book, and I made frames for photos by using black cardstock and adding photo corners with the die cut from Elizabeth Crafts-- Corners 1
Picture
Something I was really excited to add was a book within a book, a mini accordion!! I cut a piece of text weight paper down to 9 1/2" x 4", scoring it every 3" to make space for my mini pages (which are 2 7/8" x 3 7/8"). In the same way we did in the main book, you can cut out your little characters, bringing them to life. I created a pocket in my main accordion book to hold my mini book, and it worked out perfectly without it being too thick.

*Make sure to glue your ribbon (for tying your book closed!) behind that last sheet of the last page of your main accordion book*
Picture
And there you have it! A great interactive book to really make your story come to life. Easy to make in any theme, it's just all about the paper! Using embellishments, like the die cut corners, Stickles, Crystal Laquer, and brads, you can really make this book to customize your project needs.

If you ever need help with an accordion book, or just want to stop by to see this one in person, we would love to show you! We are open 7 days a week and there is always something new to see.

A customer shares...

6/21/2015

Sheryl Sparling is one of our regular customers who is just full of creativity! !

We've  been making accordion books from scratch for a few years now. We have several up in our store-- come in any day to see what we've made!!

Picture
Sheryl took the idea and made her own version of this popular book. The best part about it is the way she used embellishments  to really make it fun!!
Picture
Because this was a gift, she made space for photos and added in theme-specific papers and stickers so that it could be used to display photos from a trip.
Picture
Did you see the map?? Cute idea!!
Picture
And I just love the use of vellum for the speech bubble...
What a fun little gift idea!! Thanks for sharing Sheryl!!
