Masking Ideas with Paper and die-cuts

6/21/2019

Demo from this week was lots of fun!! We explored the world of "Masking"

What is a mask??? A mask is something that has a shape cut out and it blocks off the rest of the paper so when you apply paint or ink it only lands on where your shape is cut out. (Sometimes people refer to stencils as a "mask"... which makes sense because it is blocking off other areas while you apply ink or paint to your stencil!)

Check out some of these ideas using Masking Techniques!
Picture
Ok, a traditional mask is easy enough to do. Stamp an image onto your paper and then stamp the "ghost" stamp onto a piece of scratch paper and FUSSY CUT that image out. The fussy-cut image is now your MASK. Use a Removable Glue Dot to place the mask on top of the stamped image. This covers the image allowing you to decorate the background!!
Picture
Picture
Picture
You can also use your Hero Arts Nesting Circle die-cuts to cut a circle out of a piece of paper. Then, you can use one of your Large Picket Fence Blending Brushes to apply a soft color from your ink pad across the circle (I love to use the Kaleidacolor Rainbow Ink Pad for this effect!!). The mask makes it really easy for creating a moon or sun
Picture
Picture
Picture
You can also use the Kaleidacolor Rainbow Ink Pad to create a vibrant rainbow background on your white card stock.

THEN overlay a stencil (I used a combination of this Ocean Stencil from Carabelle Studio and this Mermaid Tail die-cut from Taylored Expressions) and apply a layer of Versafine Clair Ink, Nocturne using the Nuvo Blending Sponges.
Picture
Picture
When you apply a layer of the Versafine Clair, Nocturne Ink, the ink stays wet long enough to do Heat Embossing! To create this glittery effect, sprinkle on Kaleidoscope Embossing Powder over the black ink and heat-set it. What you end up with is this AMAZING Glittery Rainbow on the black ink.
Picture
Picture
Picture
If you let the black ink dry completely, you can go back in and add white accents with the Uniball White Gel Pen!!

The contrast here with the vibrant Rainbow Ink pad and the white gel pen creates an AMAZING effect!!
Picture
Picture
Picture
Check out this idea using the Lawn Fawn die-cut, Mushroom Border. I cut out my die-cut using just a piece of white poster board. I ALWAYS SAVE THE REVERSE IMAGE as well as the die-cut shape.
Picture
Picture
I first laid down the mushroom and grass masks so I could create my sky using my Rainbow Ink Pad. I also added a splatter of Dr. Martin's Bleedproof White to create the stars!!
Picture
Next, I laid down the grass mask (again) and the REVERSE CUT OUT of the mushrooms.

I can now colorize JUST the mushrooms using inks and the BleedProof White for the white spots
Picture
When you pull away the mask, you end up with this AMAZING combination of colors!!
Picture
I love using the die-cuts as masks because you can block off areas and use the images as stencils making it possible to make your animals face different directions or creating your own scenes or designs!!

Using the same idea as shown above, you can make a moose walking alone under the moonlight... I love this image from Taylored Expressions, Woodland Silhouettes 2
Picture
Picture
I decided I liked the grass border from the Lawn Fawn Mushroom Border set... So I used it again for the grass under the moose

I added a moon in the sky and then used a circle to BLOCK it off so I could create a night sky.
I used the REVERSE CUT OUT of the moose to make a brown moose walking among the grass.
Picture
Picture
Picture
You can create some amazing effects using Distress Oxide Spray Inks and this wonderful Cloud Stencil from Rosie's Roadshow
Picture
Using the die-cuts and REVERSE CUT-OUTS you can create an entire scene!!
Picture
Picture
Picture
When my brushes are dirty, a great way to still use up all that ink is to use your CLOUD STENCIL on a piece of white card stock... not only does it create an amazing effect, but it cleans off your blending brushes!!
Picture
Now, I wanted to create a Moon in a Galaxy!!
  • To create the MOON, I cut out a crescent moon from a piece of poster board using an X-acto knife. I used the REVERSE CUT OUT and stuck it on my paper.
  • I used a palette knife to smear the Nuvo Mousse across the moon image. I removed the mask.
  • I sprinkled on 2 colors of embossing powder (Moonstone and Gold embossing powder) and heat-set the mousse/embossing powder together.
What I end up with is this crescent moon with TEXTURE!!!!
Picture
Picture
Picture
To create theSKY and SILHOUETTES :
  •  First lay down the MOON SHAPE CUT OUT on top of the moon. To hold it in place, just use a couple pieces of double-sided tape . This blocks off the moon to keep it from changing colors when I use the other inks.
  • Lay down a layer of black ink (Versafine Clair, Nocturne ink) with a Large Picket Fence Blending Brush around the edges of the moon, LET IT DRY. THEN lay down your die-cut shapes and hold them in place with a removable glue dot. CLEAN YOUR BRUSH!
  • THEN add a layer of Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink on TOP of the black ink, again using a Large Picket Fence Blending Brush. Be careful here not to smear the ink because you want it to sit on the surface, just dabbing on the Hero Arts White Ink. LET IT DRY.
  • I used the Distress Oxide Inks with my Large Picket Fence Blending Brushes and I LOVE the look of the vibrant rainbow galaxy!!!
  • To create the white dots, I always just splatter the Dr. Martin's Bleedproof white
  • When your galaxy background is FINISHED, peel away the masks and look at the AMAZING REVEAL of the little images along the edge of the moon!!

**I recommend using the Joy of Stamping Brush Cleaner to clean your brushes when you are done using your Distess Oxide Inks** Otherwise when the ink dries your brushes might feel a little bit stiff. You can also use Stamp Cleaner to clean your brushes

This is the other idea using the same concept... This time used the Thoughtful Faerie die-cut from Poppy and the Mushroom die-cuts... the masks worked PERFECTLY together!!
Picture

There are SO MANY wonderful ideas for using your stencils, masks, and die-cuts to create stunning works of art!!!

Bling! Glitter! Mica Flakes!

6/15/2019

Here at the store, we are all about BLING! .... and by "we" I actually mean "me," Elli :-)

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE gems, glitters, mica flakes, stickles and glitter paints.. pretty much anything that sparkles makes me EXTREMELY happy!!

This week for Demo, I played with several ideas to show you the ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES in the world of Bling!
Picture
To start with, I showed everyone the AMAZING gems from Tonic/Nuvo.

The gems come in SO MANY wonderful designs!! Each container of gems has 3 sizes of the same shape... so you end up with a nice gradation of sizes in each container.
Picture
Picture
Check out these ones that look like raindrops!! I love it underneath this umbrella! They are the Water Droplets gems.
Picture
Picture
I also love using these Silver Petal gems for adding a little "extra" to my brush lettering!!
Picture
The 3 sizes of gems are PERFECT for adding the gradation of petals!!
Picture
Picture
Check out here where you can add bling to the blanket on this little Llama die cut from Taylored Expressions!!
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
The Golden Ovals gems are also great for adding "berries" onto the branches of this Berries Background Cutting Plate from Taylored Expressions
Picture
These SUPER iridescent gems are some of my ALL TIME FAVORITES
Picture
The Crystal Gems and the Amethyst Squares are both SO WONDERFUL!!!
Picture
Picture
The Crystal Gems are great for making things look like water in a bird bath or like winter berries on a tree!!!
Picture
Picture
The best part about the gems coming in 3 sizes is it makes it EASY for creating BORDERS along the edges of your stamped images...
Picture
Now, one of my FAVORITE forms of bling is the Star Shaped Glitter!! (or star confetti) from Creative Expressions
Picture
Check out this idea using The Nuvo Deluxe Adhesive to place stars in the sky... the Handmade Marbled Paper makes the BEST starry sky!!
Picture
Have you played with the Glitterific Acrylic Paints yet?!?!
Picture
Here, I created a Rainbow Background with my Calypso Rainbow Ink Pad and added the Blue Glitterific Paint in the area where I wanted water. I used a Palette Knife to apply just a thin layer...
Picture
Picture
Here, I used the Rainbow Ink pad and my Large Picket Fence Blending Brush to apply an ombre-rainbow background.

THEN I went in with Diamond Stickles and added swirls in the sky!!
Picture
Picture
Stickles are GREAT for adding just a bit of bling onto the butterfly die-cuts as well because you have such great control of the glitter... even adding tiny swirls!!
Picture
I LOVE the Mica Flakes that we carry!! They are a natural-bling and they are GREAT for ocean-themed cards!! To adhere the Mica Flakes, I use the Nuvo Deluxe Adhesive
Picture
Picture
Picture
Nuvo also creates Butterfly Confetti!! Which is great for creating a "faux shaker card" where you use Nuvo Deluxe Adhesive to adhere the butterflies in place!
Picture
Picture
You could even add just a touch of glitter onto a stamped image... using Nuvo Deluxe Adhesive to lay down just a little bit here and there...
Picture
Picture
There are SO MANY possibilities for adding bling to your art or card making!!

Stop by to see us 7 days a week to get inspired!!

NEW Creative Expressions and BLING!

4/20/2019

For those of you who don't know... We recently got in a bunch more Creative Expressions goodies!!!
Picture
I have also been IN LOVE with all their stamps!! We just got in several more!!
Picture
Picture
The Dragonfly image from Wendy's Class is also back in stock!!! This Dragonfly is GORGEOUS!!
Picture
We love, LOVE these stunning die-cuts!!! Their new sentiments are so sweet and small... Great for card making!!
Picture
Check out some of their new Tile Collection Die-cuts!!!
Picture
These new Tile die-cuts are SO FUN to play with and make cards with!!

Each of the Broken Tiles Collections have a design die-cut AND a shape-die cut so you can cut the tiles out of OTHER PAPERS or OTHER DIE-CUTS so the tiles all match up!!

Check out this card Bekah created using ALL 3 dies!! (Notice how the Bitty Dots die-cut was then cut out of one of the broken tiles shape so it matched up PERFECTLY with the other 2 shapes!!!)

After Bekah created her 3 tiles she adhered them to a piece of Silver Glitter Paper. I love the contrast here!!
Picture
Picture
I also LOVE what Tracy created here where she layered RED SCRAPS of paper and a fun black and red doodle UNDERNEATH the Broken Tile die-cut shapes!!!  She pasted the tiles she created onto a piece of Black Glitter Paper.

The contrast and the COLORS are so much fun here!!!
Picture

Creative Expressions and Nuvo both make AMAZING BLING!!!!!

Shaped Gems
Shaped Glitter
Gold Leafing
Biodegradable Glitter

Of course, when these NEW GEMS came in I was SCREAMING WITH JOY but even better is that they come in so many WONDERFUL designs!!
Picture
Picture
Each container comes with 3 sizes of gems!!! I love how iridescent and glittery they are!
Picture
Of course, I was OVER THE MOON at the Butterfly AND Star Shaped Glitter!!!!
Picture
Picture
Picture
Just LOOK how tiny these little Butterflies are!! I love how precious this card is when you add the little butterflies in as an embellishment!!

(But really, any of the shaped glitters OR gems would also work great for Shaker Cards!)
Picture
I love HOW MANY different colors of Star-Shaped Glitter that Creative Expressions carries!!

It makes me SO HAPPY!
Picture
Just look how wonderful!!
Picture
Also, Creative Expressions makes these FANTASTIC containers of Gold Leaf flakes in a variety of different color combinations... and they REALLY pack these full... so you get a LOT of leafing!!!
Picture
Now, Glitter has kind of been getting a lot of flack recently because it's *not great for the environment* ... and when I saw that Creative Expressions makes BIODEGRADABLE GLITTER I was SO EXCITED to get some for myself!!!

I love the different shapes of glitter in it too!!!

For those of us who craft ALL THE TIME there are some tools that we use regularly.. and we have FALLEN IN LOVE with these newest tools from Tonic!!

NEW Silicone Media Spatulas!!

Silicone is super easy to clean AND works with a variety of mediums.. from Mousse to Acrylic Paint to Resin... these Silicone Media Spatulas are a MUST HAVE in the craft room... I use mine ALL THE TIME and I am over the moon at the design
Picture
Specifically, they work great with the NEW Expanding Mousse!!
Picture
Picture
We also got in these SUPER SOFT and wonderful Stencil Brushes!!! Great for getting in-between all the intricate lines of your stencils... They come in a pack of 4 brushes. We haven't had a chance to play with them yet but we are EXCITED TO!!
Picture

We also got in... MORE EXPANDING MOUSSE!!!

Picture

Nuvo Expanding Mousse is a kind of Stencil Paste, but when it is wet you can use your Heat-Gun to heat-set it and when you do it PUFFS UP and looks really cool!!!

Picture
Picture
Just look how the Mousse puffs up when heated with the Heat-Gun!!
Picture
AND AND AND

Check out the NEW MIDAS TOUCH Shimmer Pen!!!!

If you are like us, you probably already own the Aqua Shimmer Pen (it is iridescent, great for watercoloring techniques and SHIMMERY!) but now they have come out with a GOLD VERSION!!!
Picture
The Midas Touch Shimmer Pen has a gold hue to it, and in my personal opinion, makes it appear SUPER SHIMMERY!!

Just look at the comparison...
Picture

We got in all 6 colors of the Dream Drops and I can tell you... Bekah owns all 6 colors now!!! And I own 3!!

THEY ARE  SO MAGICAL and AMAZING!!!
If you LOVE the Nuvo Crystal Drops you will be EXCITED TO HEAR we now have:

Vintage Drops
Stone Drops
Dream Drops

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
YES they are ALSO SELF-LEVELING as well as iridescent!!
Picture
CHECK OUT THIS IDEA!!

You can use your Dream Drops (or any Crystal Drops for that matter) as a STENCIL PASTE!!!!

Here's how:
  • Apply a small amount of Dream Drops to your Silicone Media Spatula
  • Use a stencil on a sheet of paper (or the hole left-over after a die-cut works too...)
  • Smear the Silicone Media Spatula over the stencil and then lift it off and CLEAN IMMEDIATELY (otherwise the medium will bond to the stencil)
  • Look in Aw at how STUNNING the image is!!!! And how cool is this... ANY Crystal or Dream Drops can quickly become a stencil paste... what a fantastic concept.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
I LOVE the iridescent effect!!!

I paired this background I created with the ALL NEW Sentiment die-cuts from Tonic!!!

Picture
Picture

I decided I wanted to create a soft-background so I cut my die-cut out of 2 shades of white... a metallic card stock (Stardream, Ice Gold) and a matte white card stock (Solar White, Smooth)

JUST LOOK how magical this card is!!
Picture
Ok, ok... Now it's time for MY FAVORITE!!!!!

NEW Gems  and Glitter!!!!!!!!
Picture

Star-shaped glitter is AMAZING for shaker cards, as an embellishment, or to have just because it is amazing!!

The GEMS are flat-backed and include 3 sizes of gems in each container... JUST LOOK HOW MAGICAL!!!
Picture
Picture
I loved this idea... stamping an image and doing some watercolor.  Then framing the image with the purple gems.

I use The Ultimate Glue to adhere my gems to my paper... and the shape/color/sizes make for a WONDERFUL embellishment with this Laurel Burch image, Mermaid Flow
Picture
There is SO MUCH to love here at the store these days... stop by so we can show you JUST HOW WONDERFUL!!!

See you soon!!

Tuesday with Wendy, Dec 4th

12/4/2018

This week's Tuesday with Wendy cards are SO MUCH FUN for this time of year!!

Check out how exciting they are!!!
Picture
The first card that Wendy designed was inspired from this Paper Rose Stamp Set, Cozy Christmas as well as this die-cut from Taylored Expressions, Birch Tree Border
Picture
Picture
To make the card:
  • Use your home die-cut machine to cut out the Birch Tree Border from ivory card stock and cut a snow drift (for the bottom of the card) using a pair of scissors to cut a nice snow drift
  • Use Nuvo Deluxe Adhesive to adhere the tree and snow drift in place
  • Use the Versafine Clair ink, Nocturne, to stamp the little animals from the Paper Rose stamp set. Wendy arranged the animals in a cute way... I LOVE how she perched the little bird on the hat of the little bear!!
  • Stamp the little Snowflake image with Hero Arts White Ink around the tree.
  • Use Prismacolor colored pencils  to color in the little images from the stamp set, like the little bears, birds, and owl
  • Finish off the card by applying Marvy Liquid Applique along the branches of the tree. Use a heat gun to dry the Liquid Applique and watch as it raises and puffs.. making it look JUST LIKE SNOW!
LOOK HOW CUTE this card is!!!!

Not only are the little animals so cute, but this card is great for the Winter Season!!
Picture
Check out how one of the gals colored their images... I LOVE IT!!!
Picture
The next card Wendy designed was inspired from this tree design from Penny Black, Christmas Foliage and this ADORABLE die-cut set from Impression Obsession, small birds
Picture
Picture
To make the card:
  • Wendy used the Tim Holtz Stamp Platform to apply the Versafine Clair inks to the Tree image.. She applied the Rain Forest ink to the foliage part of the tree and the Pinecone ink to the trunk of the tree.
  • Stamp the image onto ivory card stock
  • Cut out the Little Birds die-cut (from Impression Obsession) out of black card stock and arrange the birds on your tree in an appealing way. Use Nuvo Deluxe Adhesive to adhere the birds to the tree
Picture
The last card that Wendy designed was inspired from this new stencil from Kaisercraft, Sea Urchins and this Sea Urchin stamp from Fred B. Mullett
Picture
Picture
To make the card:
  • Use the new Seashell Wide Washi Tape from Altenew and adhere a strip along the left side of the card base
  • Wendy cut out a piece of background paper for the right side of the card (she chose a paper from the Kiasercraft Deep Sea Collection, Anemone) and stamped the Sea Urchin Stamp using the Versafine Clair ink, Monarch. Wendy stamped the Sea Urchin image several times on the background paper. Use double-sided tape to adhere the paper down.
  • Next, take a piece of white card stock and rip the edges to make it look distressed. Use the new Picket Fence Large Blending Brushes to apply Distress Ink to the piece of card stock. Wendy used Distress ink colors Wilted Violet and Broken China. The new Blending Brushes are SO SOFT and work great for applying a soft layer of ink.
  • Use a Palette Knife to apply some Light Molding Paste to the Silicone Craft Mat to create 2 piles of paste... one is colored with Violet ColorBurst and the other is colored with Ultramarine Blue ColorBurst
  • Use the Light Molding Paste and the Sea Urchins stencil to apply a thin layer of the Light Molding Paste to the SAME piece of ripped card stock.
  • Sprinkle some Multi Crystal Glitter Mix to the Sea Urchin-stenciled paste while it is still wet.
  • Put a piece of the the Gold Mesh Ribbon in the middle of the card and use The Ultimate Glue to adhere the ripped strip of paper on top of everything.
  • Stamp the Sea Urchin stamp onto teal card stock and heat emboss with Detail Gold Embossing Powder. Fussy-cut the Sea Urchin image and use Mounting Tape to adhere the Sea Urchin image so it adds dimension
Just look HOW FUN this card is!!! We love how artistic it is... and the movement of the Sea Urchin throughout the card is just PERFECT!
Picture
One of the gals in class decided to sprinkle on the Detail Gold Embossing Powder on top of the wet Molding Paste and used a Heat Gun to heat-set it. The effect that is created is called the "Molten Lava" effect... and although this technique was not taught in class... it still looks SO COOL for this card!!!
Picture
Join us for the next Tuesday with Wendy!! It will be offered on December 18th.
